hay ride

It's time for the MHR Hay Ride!

Providing the horses with the hay they need is a very expensive proposition. We started this drive with enough hay for the next nine months, but thanks to rising expenses, we are now raising funds month to month.

We hope we have some enticements for you that may make our goals a little easier to achieve.

******

Thank you for making our first fundraiser for the hay fund a successful one. Our hay drive continues and we will be offering special opportunities to entice you to donate to help feed the horses.

Please remember that our horses are hungry and they love their hay! Contributions are gladly accepted on our donations page. Because MHR is a 501(3)c federally recognized non-profit organization, your donations are tax deductible.

Our first fundraising effort started August 27, with the generous donation of a beautiful print by the artist, Kathleen Parsons.

Kathleen Parsons (kathleenk9), a fellow FOB and Rosie/Misty watcher, graciously donated one of her prints of "Run with the Angels" to raise funds for the hay supply needed by the horses at MHR and we had a drawing for this wonderful work of art. Kathleen created an original painting of Barbaro as her personal tribute to him. She posted a picture of it on another thread and immediately received requests to purchase prints of the painting. Kathleen consented and all money above cost was donated to the buyer's favorite horse fund. The paper size of the entire print is 12 x 17 1/2, the image size is 9 1/2 x 13 - it fits into a standard 16 x 20 matt and frame. Kathleen has agreed to draw the winning name and will mail the print to the winner of the hay drawing - no charge for packaging or tax. The Barbaro  print is signed by Kathleen and is dated January 29, 2007.

After a successful beginning to the hay drive, Kathleen herself drew the winning ticket. The winner was Sue Rollison, a long-time FOB who has donated generously to many rescues. Congratulations Sue!

Thanks to this effort, $1180 was raised for the Hay Fund. Thank you all for your support.

Now....on to our October effort!!!!

As part of her prize, our September winner, Sue Rollison, names Acey and Dublin as honorary "Hay Horses." Congratulations Acey and Dublin. Please meet your teammates, Jerri and Nellie. Hurry please, time's a-wasting!

Thanks to the tremendous generosity of our friend, myhund (Bev), we are able to offer TWO very valuable new first edition, hardcover books. Dear Bev donated these with the comment, "For the horses." Thank you, Bev!

Old Friends

Book #1 is OLD FRIENDS by Barbara D. Livingston (hardcover, first edition, published 2002)

"Barbara catches a spark in the eye of these older horses that reminds us of the days when their strides were long and they were filled with determination."

Julie Krone
Hall of Fame Jockey

[Look up this book on amazon, and be prepared to be surprised! This first edition, hard cover book in new condition is being sold starting at $169.79]

SecretariatBook #2 is about Big Red himself, SECRETARIAT By Timothy Capps (hardcover, first edition, published 2003)

Book #19 in the thoroughbred legend series, this hardcover book is now out of print and getting hard to find.

Brand new, never opened, 222 pages.

November Hay Drive

We are happy to announce the lucky winner of our October hay drive: Peggi Loveless (aka MarginMaine). Congratulations Peggi! You are very lucky to have these valuable first edition books and thank you so much Bev for the generous donation.

This effort resulted in $790 in ticket sales for the Hay Fund. Thank you all!

How do we follow a beautiful print by our own artist, Kathleen Parsons (Run with the Angels) and two first edition books? How can we keep your interest and pick your wallet? Well, it's safe to say that everybody loves our two babies, Baby B and Spirit. What could we offer that's connected to them....

You're in for a very special treat this month! Our friend Kathleen Parsons has created another beautiful painting and she has made prints of this painting available to MHR.

This is "The Legacy." These two young horses are here today because of Barbaro and his effect on all of us. Rosie and Misty are two of the horses saved from auction in October 2006, who came to MHR in foal and who gave birth (in front of us all) to these two beautiful, well loved, safe foals.

The Legacy
click here for a closer look

Proceeds of the sale are generously donated to MHR by Kathleen and we are proud to announce that The Legacy print is now available on our web site.

But that's not our offer for the November Hay Drive. Please feel free to order the print, but we are offering chances to win the print at a very reasonable price: One chance is $5, or three chances for $8.

December Hay Drive

The winner of the Legacy print by Kathleen Parsons is none other than Gloria Nussbaum. Congratulations, Gloria! You're really going to enjoy this lovely print. Thanks to all who bought tickets.

Pulling the wagon this month are Rosie and Misty, who are looking forward to meeting Nellie and Jerri and telling them all about what it's like to be featured on marestare, day in and day out. They'll be pointing out the camera and giving the girls hints about what really works to get us all addicted to non-stop watching.

The last item for 2007 has been donated by our very generous friend and supporter, Karen Borstad. It's a lovely little pewter lapel pin that reminds all of us of our soon-to-arrive Percherons, Nellie and Jerri. The pin is 1 3/4" long head to tail, and about 1 1/2" tall.

pewter pin

In addition, the pin comes complete with its own home, a mare-foal trinket box, and a little nourishment...a milk chocolate rocking horse purchased at Vermont's Chocolate Barn. The perfect way to start 2008!

The top of the box is tiled with a picture of a mare and foal. Its dimensions are 6 3/4" x 5" x 2 1/4" and it's lined with a rich green velvet material.

We have a few of the pewter pins available to purchase for $30 each which includes shipping. Email Bev, obedog@aol.com  to check for availability.

January Drawing

Our December winners are Betty Cordoza and KarenND. Betty won the pin and box, and Karen won the print. Thank you all for participating!

Now we move on the January's effort.

All FOBs know what January means, and we are steeling ourselves for the 29th, when our hearts were broken and we felt such disappointment and pain. The pain has faded a bit, but Barbaro's influence on all of us is still so very evident. Many of us are reading these words only because of Barbaro. Barbaro was a true athlete and an inspiration to us all. We still run for Barbaro!

Thanks to the generous donations of several FOBs, the theme for this month's drawing is

MHR: Our Tribute to Barbaro Memorial Hay Wagon Ride

GloriaI Nussbaum, winner of the November prize, has named the honorary horse team for this month's trek as Simba Marie and Jonah.

We'll also be including a surprise magazine in this prize package.

As a January bonus, we're offering tickets for one more separate drawing for the print of Run with the Angels by our friend, FOB Kathleen Parsons. The Barbaro print is signed by Kathleen and is dated January 29, 2007.

If you'd like a chance to win this print, tickets are $8.00 each, or 3 for $15.

Tickets are $10.00 each or two for $15.00.

The babies wanted to donate something to this but being only babies it was hard for them to figure out what they have for the hay ride prize. After careful and long consideration they decided that this was the best prize of all:

horse kisses

Kisses from Baby B and Spirit. But they also know this is a fund raiser so the drawing prize will be this:

horse angel

A beautiful Sterling silver Angel Horse Pendant, donated by the designer, Bud Cravener, in honor of all the MHR horses and Barbaro who have crossed the Rainbow Bridge.  Thanks to Linda H. for finding this talented artist and obtaining this donation. Tickets are $10.00 for one or 2 for $15.00

April Drawing

The MHR Hay Wagon will start to traverse around the country on April 2nd .  It will return home on April 29th with a drawing on the 30th. The winner of the March Hay Fundraiser Kathie has  chosen Rosie and her beau Trooper to pull this month’s wagon.

Since the Valentine and Easter Cookie fund raisers were so successful, it’s time to expand to a full menu of tasty hay dishes for the horses. Nerdy Ned has been secretly taking cooking classes with our very own Cathy P. It’s with great pride we announce the new “Restaurante MHR” cuisine available for the horse/s of your choice.

You may join one or more horses in the Restaurante MHR.  It is your choice and includes culinary choices for dinner, lunch, and of course, tips for Nerdy Ned. Our lovely hostess, Stephanie, will notify Mary of orders received and she will e-mail you a “reservation” e-ticket. Our seating hostess, Ro will mark your name next to the horse or horses of your choice. Have you ever envisioned a candlelight dinner for you and a horse at MHR? Perhaps you've thought about “ponying” up to the buffet table with your favorite filly or colt? Here’s your chance. On a diet? Then Nerdy Ned would love a tip from you.

Lastly, something that goes along with every Derby -- official Kentucky Derby commemorative mint julep glasses, four of them.  Each year is different, but somewhere the glass features roses and a TBred.  On the back of each is a roster of each year's winners and a question mark for the year of that particular year's race. They are 1992, 1991, 1990 and 1989 and have been donated by SusanE . This is an example of what a Kentucky Derby mint julep looks like:

Barbaro/Livingston

Tickets for this prize are $5/ea or 3 for $10.

June Drawing

May winner Pat Skidmore has chosen Whiskey and Sinatra to be the lead horses for this month's hay ride.

Frankly, we're not doing too well with our most recent hay drives. We started out in this effort in a very strong way, but because of what we assume is mainly the economy, contributions have dwindled. The cost of hay is extremely high in southern Nevada and our expenses, as are all of yours, through the roof! We've decided that this month we must reach a certain level before the sales will close. If that level isn't reached, sales will continue for these items through July.

This month we have a very special jewelry piece by Jane Heart donated by one of our super special supporters.

BARBARO™ heart brooch in sterling silver. Standard pin finding goes across the back and is not shown in photo. The heart measures 1 1/8" by 1 1/8" and has the BARBARO trademark stamp on the back. Copyright 2007. This pin has a retail value of $210.

Barbaro brooch

Tickets for this high value item are one for $15 and two tickets for $25. This a gorgeous piece. Many many thanks to our donor and, of course. to Jane Heart for creating it.

The second very special offering is the winner's choice of ONE of three signed Barbara Livington framed 8x10 Barbaro photographs. We are delighted and very grateful to say that these signed photographs have been donated by Barbara Livingston herself, who is a fan of Miracle Horse Rescue. Thank you so much Ms. Livingston!

The choices are

Barbaro/Barbara Livingston

Barbaro/Barbara Livingston

Barbaro/Barbara Livington

Tickets for the frame and choice of pictures are $15 for one or two for $25. The winner of the drawing may pick one photo of choice.

WINNER UPDATE: Congratulations to August winner, JeriC27. She will receive the Barbaro photograph autographed by Barbara Livingston. As mentioned above, the second part of the hay fund drive will continue through September

January 2009 Hay Ride

Thank you to Linda F of PA, who won the December Hay Ride of 2008. Linda has picked CB and Dublin as lead horses for this month. Remember all proceeds go to the hay fund. Now, here is the "tail" for this month's hay ride:

Once upon a time there were two great race horses, one young male and one filly. This month's hay ride will allow someone to own something very unique and hard to find in the horse racing world.

The first drawing prize came about by chance. A person went to the Saratoga race track to obtain Edgar Prado's signature on a small Fred Stone print of Barbaro. Who did she meet while at the race track? None other than Michael Matz who also graciously signed the print. It is 8 by 10 inches.

Barbaro, Prado, Matz

The print alone is a sure winner.

The second drawing prize is about the filly. This prize has been donated by Deborah G. Thank you ever so much. This print also comes framed ready for hanging in a favorite spot.

Ruffian print

Deborah tells us: "...color print of Ruffian which is double matted and is signed by the artist, Celeste Susany. The print itself is about 4" x 6" and in the matting is 8" x 10" -- It looks like the original was an oil painting."

Both of these signed prints were donated to MHR, thus the caveat we cannot guarantee the signatures as we were not there when each was signed.

Tickets are $15 each or two for $25.

January 31, 2009: Our winners this month are Lisa L (mom of Hope and AJ) for the Barbaro print, and Janet L for the Ruffian print. Congratulations winners!!! And thanks everyone for your support!

February 2009 Hay Ride

Each month there is a different hay ride and the winner of the January Hay Ride, Lisa L, has selected AJ and Hope to lead the wagon looking for hay across the countryside.

The month's hay ride is about feelings from the heart. The first drawing's prize is in memory of Eight Belles, the gallant dominant racing filly who was attempting to become only the fourth filly in history to win the Kentucky Derby when tragedy struck. She proved she could run with the boys in any given race, coming in second in the Derby.

This beautiful framed photo of Eight Belles has been donated by a long time MHR supporter, Ro . It captures the beauty and spirit of this championship filly.

8 belles print

Along with this framed photo is this bracelet which was hand crafted by Dawn, from Omaha. Bracelet is about 7" silver, substantial weight. Eight Belles is the main charm in the middle surrounded by 4 bells on either side. Just before the clasp there is a red bead reflecting her stable color. Thank you Dawn for helping out with this fund raiser and Ro for making this item available.

Second drawing prize will melt anyone's heart. It is called the "Four Foals of MHR" and features four teddy bears, each with a photo of one of the foals born at MHR. This prize is the complete collection of "The Four Foals of MHR."

February update: The Eight Belles portion of the February Hay Ride has ended. Thank you all who joined the fun. The winner is Jeri of the O'Hay Clan.

Thank you Ro who made this prize available.

The "Four Foals of MHR" Teddy Bears portion of the hay ride has now joined the March Hay Ride. The reserve was not met so it will be offered through March. All tickets purchased will be honored.

All proceeds from this hay ride go to the hay fund at MHR.

March 2009 Hay Ride

The winner of the February Hay Ride, Jeri of the O'Hay Clan, has chosen our newest guests, Marigold and Destiny, to lead the March Hay Ride.

Brothers by birth and by racing genes

Who can forget the poignant racing career of Barbaro? The sight of him, his racing colors and Edgar Prado in the saddle seemingly "flying" through the air while on his way to winning the Kentucky Derby. This is a signed by Barbara Livingston photo capturing a moment of time in that race, his last  race. MHR thanks Ms Livingston for once again donating one of her fantastic signed photos of Barbaro. Her support of MHR is greatly appreciated.

Barbaro

Not the outcome that anyone wanted in his first race, but what a fantastic photo of Nicanor running. This photo captures a special moment in time, his racing colors and Edgar Prado in the saddle.

Both photos are 8 by 10 inches and come specially framed.

The second drawing prize will melt anyone's heart. It is called the "Four Foals of MHR" and features four teddy bears, each with a photo of one of the foals born at MHR. This prize is the complete collection of "The Four Foals of MHR." This is a continuation of  the February Hay Ride.

April 2009 Hay Ride

The winner of the March Hay Ride: Brothers is Marilyn Haley and she has chosen Spirit and Trooper to lead the April Hay ride team as it ambles across the countryside looking for hay.

This month, all the horses at MHR have decided to start their own hay stimulus package for us. The first prize is a signed and numbered Fred Stone print of Barbaro. Thanks to long time MHR supporter CathyP for writing to Mr Stone.

Fred Stone Barbaro

"Barbaro-A Legacy Of Hope" - by Fred Stone
20" x 22" for both print & canvas

One of 1200 signed and numbered prints, this print is sold out and available only on the secondary market at prices beginning at $300. Mr. Stone's work is in the homes of some of the world’s most notable people including Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and was in the office of the president in the White House according to many web sites. So why is this part of the stimulus package, you ask? Tickets are $15 each or two for $25. Imagine owning this print at this price. A reserve has been placed on this print.

The second drawing prize is a beautiful pewter horse frame ready for your favorite photo. It will hold a 4 by 6 inch picture.

Tickets for this prize are $10 each or two for $25. There is beautiful detail in this picture frame and it has a reserve placed on it as well. All proceeds go to the hay fund.

May Hay Ride: Run for the Roses

In honor of the Derby and the unveiling of the monument to Barbaro, MHR would like to present the May Hay Ride:

First Prize is this stunning hand painted ceramic art object that any racing fan or horse lover would just love to own.

ceramic horse

The Run for the Roses story tag reads:

The Kentucky Derby is the most prestigious horse race in the America. In a matter of seconds, hopes can be dashed, dreams can be realized, and fortunes can be won or lost. The outcome is never sure until those final moments when horses and jockies thunder down the home stretch. Equestrian artist extraordinaire, Janee Hughes, has captured the excitement of the race for the finish line in the bright colors and straining muscles of the horses and riders...with the roses as a reminder of the importance of the outcome.

According to Janee Hughes, this pony embodies not only the excitement of horse racing, but the spirit of the Kentucky Derby. "The Derby is the most prestigious race in America," she says. "It is the culmination of many years of hopes and dreams for the hundreds of people involved. In a few seconds, hopes can be dashed, dreams can be realized, and fortunes can be won or lost. Anything can happen in a horse race. The outcome is never sure until those final moments when the horses and jockeys thunder to the finish line. I tried to capture this excitement in the bright colors and straining muscles of the horses and riders, with the roses always a reminder of the importance of the moment."

June 2009 Hay Ride

The winner of the May Ride winner is Cathy Potter. To lead this very special June Hay ride, she has chosen General and Silky. Winner of the ceramic horse is Melody. Congratulations to you both!

This month's hay ride is a very special ride. We often think of Barbaro with images of racing and running like the wind in our minds. But there was another side of him, when he was not racing. Inquisitive, friendly and maybe a little shy comes to mind. We remember the photo of him with the cow along the fence. How delightful that was!

Barbara Livingston captured a very special moment of Barbaro's life when Rafael was walking him around one afternoon. What is that grey thing under the tree? He looked and looked and yes it was a cat!!

MHR would like to present a signed by Barbara Livingston 8 by 10 framed photo of this encounter. --- Our June item has been continued into July.

July 2009 Hay Ride

From The Trail of Painted Ponies. Kitty Cat's Ball. Made of ceramic. Measures 6" high. Artist: Elizabeth Lewis Scott "Here is what happens when daytime-snoozing feline souls cut loose by the light of the new moon. They jig and waltz, slide a sinuous tango and pound out a mad polka," says the artist. "By day, we only see those half-smiles on snoring kitty faces as they grace our chairs and sofas, or doze in the garden beneath the lilacs. They grin from within as they recall the gavotte from the night before and shiver with delight, dreaming of the next Kitty Cat?s Ball."

October 2009 Hay Ride

The winner of the August/September Hay Ride digital frame prize is brend121 and gina6111 won the $300 Visa Gift Card. Buttercup and Shania have been chosen to lead this month's exciting hay ride.

All spring and summer, many, many horses have been led into the winner's circle during the horse racing season. Some made it all look easy while others won with determination and true grit. The "buzz" around the stables has been wow, look at that filly. Look at her, she took on the boys and won or she is/was the best filly of all time!

MHR has found a unique way to honor all of those great fillies. Presenting: Trail of the Painted Pony: Fantastic Fillies

Fantastic Fillies

When she was invited to paint a Pony that honored the racehorse, Janee, a children’s book illustrator, imagined four fast fillies charging down the homestretch, the winner crossing the finish line a nose ahead of the others. The artistry in her design is heightened by the contrasting colors of the horses and the silks of the jockeys set against a midnight-black background, and the determination and courage etched on the faces of the fillies.

* Ceramic
* Measures 6"
* Artist: Janee Hughes

November 2009 Hay Ride

Stephanie and Faith

Faith Moves Mountains was the title of her thread. Yes, faith does move mountains for many people in different ways.

Faith moved mountains to get to MHR. She had to cross over mountains and valleys to arrive safely at her new home. She was cherished by all who watched her every movement. That bale of hay was a mountain that she quickly demolished with the banging of her front hoof. We all watched in amazement how shy she was and yet in a short period of time became a trusting mare under MHR guidance.

Faith Moved Mountains of years of poor treatment and abuse by the PMU industry and delivered a healthy colt, named Justice, and a short five months later, Faith crossed over the Rainbow Bridge.

Yes, indeed Faith Moves Mountains was the title of her thread, but Faith Moved Into Our Hearts. We shall never forget her.

To honor Faith in a very special way, MHR presents this tribute to Faith, Our Sweet Faith.

Faith bracelet

This bracelet is a fitting tribute to Faith and all that she stands for. The blue bracelet with crisp black lettering will be our reminder that indeed Faith Moves Mountains.

The cost of this tribute is $5.00 per bracelet which includes shipping. For a donation of $10, three bracelets can be mailed to the same address. All proceeds will be going into the hay fund to purchase bales of hay.
